Mountain Bike riding on Via Transilvanica the Romanian “El Camino”

10.01.2025

Via Transilvanica is a scenic long-distance trail that traverses the heart of Romania, connecting the northern region of Bucovina with the southern region of Transylvania, stretching over 1,400 kilometers. Known as the “Path that unites” it weaves through diverse landscapes, from lush forests and rolling hills to ancient villages and medieval cities. Along the way, travelers encounter historic landmarks like Saxon fortified churches, traditional manors, and majestic castles, while enjoying the vibrant biodiversity of wildflower-filled meadows and cool, ancient oak groves. Designed especially for hikers and nature enthusiasts, most the trail can also be ridden by mountain bike. The path offers a blend of physical challenge and cultural immersion. It invites exploration of Romania’s rich heritage, including local cuisine, authentic accommodations, and the warm hospitality of its people. Whether you’re tracing the footsteps of history or seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, Via Transilvanica promises unforgettable experiences. Perfect for solo travelers and groups alike, it’s a journey into the timeless beauty and stories of Transylvania.

We, at CarpathianDreams together with our local partners like MTBBN and ROA Outdoor, are one of the first operators to offer guided and self guided trips on Via Transilvanica, both for hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts.

This season we continued our adventure on Via Transilvanica for the 4th year in a row.

After exploring the first sections from Bucovina to Transylvania in 2021, the Land of Castles in 2022, and Terra Siculorum in 2023, this summer we dived ourselves into the medieval land of Saxon fortified churches.

We had a fascinating experience with colorful meadows, cool ancient forests, lost in time villages, castles and manors, impressive fortified churches, delicious food, authentic accommodations, and most importantly, remarkable people who helped us discover the unique charm of the places we visited.

Since we were in the area, we couldn’t miss the Transylvania Bike Trails. On our first MTB tour day on the Via Transilvanica, we enjoyed the flow of single trails through the cool forests of the Transylvanian Hills.

Day 2 on the Via Transilvanica took us from Saschiz to Sighișoara, through timeless villages, wild forests, and vast pastures, accompanied by bee-eaters and the distant peaks of the Făgăraș Mountains. The single trails to Daia and Sighișoara brought us even more joy.

On Day 3, we biked from Sighișoara to Biertan, through meadows and forests with ancient oaks, across ridges and valleys, discovering fortified churches, castles, and manors.

A long day awaited us, so we started with a delicious breakfast at Pensiunea Citadela, paired with a breathtaking view.

On the Breite plateau, dotted with ancient oaks, we soaked in the serene atmosphere.

The Bethlen Castle in Criș is an absolute must-visit.

We also stopped by the fortified church in Mălâncrav and the Apafi Manor.

From the garden of Casa Eva Wagner, we enjoyed what is arguably the best view of the impressive fortified church in Biertan – the perfect spot for a dinner with a medieval vibe.

On our final cycling day in Terra Saxonum along the Via Transilvanica, we joined parts of the beautiful Mediaș Bike Marathon trails, passing through Biertan, Nemșa, Moșna, Mediaș, and Bazna.

We look forward to seeing you again next season!
